The monument to St. Francis of Assisi (1181 / 82-1226) on the square of Porta S. Giovanni was inaugurated in 1927 on the occasion of the seventh centenary of the death of the saint.
The sculptural group remembers the pilgrimage of the Saint in Rome with Pope Innocent III along with his followers to acknowledge the rule of his foundation.
On the front is the inscription and the dedication; on the other sides are the verses of the XI song of the Paradise of the Divine Comedy, with which Dante Alighieri describes the figure of the saint.
The Saint’s recurrence is on October 4th.
