#Roma: December 8 is the Catholic feast of the “Immaculate Conception”, a dogma of faith proclaimed by Pope Pius IX in 1854. On this occasion, a column bearing a statue of the Virgin Mary was placed in Piazza Mignanelli next to Piazza di Spagna in 1857. The column comes from Roman excavations, while the statue was sculpted by G. Obici. The column and the statue were erected with the help of 220 firefighters and for this reason still today the brigades lay flowers on the Madonna in this feast. This anniversary is very dear to the Roman people and every year the pontiff attends the ceremony of the flowers.
